Last December I took my 10-year-old to see Star Wars Rogue One with my best friend growing up. The movie was incredible, but my 10-year-old didn’t stop shifting around in his seat the entire time. It drove me a nuts and I felt a little bad for the guy sitting on my son’s left. He’s always been fidgety like that (just like me) and has problems sitting still, just like a lot of other kids (and some adults) I know. If I’ve got a quarter in my pocket I’ll take it out and flip it over and over in my first three fingers. I’ll wrap and rewrap a rubber band around my fingers. So, a couple weeks after the movie, I’m telling one of my in-laws about this and she starts talking pulling a handful of fidget toys out of her purse!
I was surprised, but she told me how playing with one during the day has helped her concentrate on work. Then I start noticing a bunch of people in the office have spinners (a type of fidget toy) and other stuff sitting on their desks. The more I look around, in the real world and online, the more I see this kind of thing.
Fidget toys can help with concentration, can relieve anxiety, reduce stress, and give busy hands something to keep them out of trouble. They are also said to help with symptoms for ADD, ADHD, and Autism. A search for fidget toys on Amazon brings up 14,000+ results. Fidget toys themselves aren’t anything new, worry stones have been around for some time, but their popularity is on the rise. These toys are also getting more and more sophisticated to appeal to the larger community. There are a number of different types of fidget toys available.

For the fidgety techie!
I just found out there’s even a kind of fidget gizmo for your feet that attaches to the bottom of a desk!
After playing around with a couple of them, I ended up ordering a pair of fidget cubes, one for my son and one for me. If they end up being a hit in the house, I’ll probably be ordering more!
