Schools Ban Homework
If schools ban homework, it would be a dream come true for many kids! As strange as this might sound to you and me, this seems to be the growing thought behind schools. With a story that is highlighting this in Florida during a local ABC Newscast, Heidi Maier, the Marion County Superintendent issued a “no homework” mandate to teachers at the district’s 31 elementary schools.
The research Heidi refers to is from a study, conducted by Richard Allington, a University of Tennessee professor of theory and practice in teacher education. His study shows that there are more positive sides to reading to your elementary school aged child over giving them homework (You can see more of his work here). This trend started with one East Tennessee school and has started to grow.
The research from Richard shows teachers seeing an improvement in enthusiasm about school. They are also seeing a larger desire to learn when they are not bogged down with homework every night. The research also shows that there is a more positive effect when children are reading. Richard says that they should continue to read 20 minutes every night.
What Do the Parents Think?
What are parents saying about this? Most tend to like the idea that schools ban homework. Most parents are just as frustrated with homework as the students are. If you’re a parent, think about it. How many arguments have you had with your child or children about homework? I know I have personally experienced this numerous times! Trying to work and help with the daily homestead tasks along with assisting in homework tends to be overbearing at times (which is what brought on our “Balancing Work and Home” article)!
Parents of students where schools ban homework also state that they see a positive difference at home. The student is less frustrated as all they need to do is a small optional exercise, which frees the parents up as well! This would be a dream come true for my family! Trying to rush around making dinner, helping the kids with homework, and having enough free time to allow them to play and be a kid is non-existent! Having no homework would be a definite relief!
