Hiding Veggies: Cauliflower

tales from the dad side - mashed cauliflower

It’s a struggle to get my kids to eat their veggies. That’s a struggle that I know a lot of parents go through. My oldest dislikes veggies in general. If absolutely forced to eat a vegetable he may resort to putting as small a piece as he can in his mouth and then swallowing it with some water, like a pill. My middle child will eat some veggies. Spinach usually isn’t a problem, carrots if they’re raw, sometimes broccoli. The toddler is still pretty good about eating the vegetables I…

Flu Shot Follies

Yesterday I loaded the toddler into the car, picked up the kids from school, and headed to the pediatrician for annual checkups! What fun! You see, my oldest two kids have birthdays that are 4 days apart, so we can double up on things and get a two-fer in for trips to the doctor. (Our pediatrician is almost an hour’s drive away. Protect Your Garden from Slugs!

I enjoy gardening. I’ve even thought about going hard core and getting into aquaponic gardening. It’s a good way to get outside, do something with my hands, and, if I’m successful, I can provide my family with some fresh produce throughout the summer. The garden has been going pretty well…

Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act In May, President Donald Trump rolled back the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, one of former First Lady Michelle Obama’s programs, which provided healthier options for school cafeterias. This action, along with much of the current president’s decisions, has caused a fair amount of debate. My first reaction to this news was ‘why would you undo something meant to ensure school-aged kids have a healthy meal?,’ but there are some cafeteria directors that are in favor of the president’s changes. The specific change made by President Trump…

Dissolving the Dad Bod, Part 2 Exercise

Tales from the Dad Side - exercise

Exercise. Ugh, that word, exercise, always seems like it’s accompanied by a groan (at least in my head if nothing else). But when you’ve got a gut like I do–affectionately referred to by my wife as a “papa belly”–and you want to get rid of it, exercise is a necessary thing. If you’re not familiar with the majesty that is the dad bod check out my previous post about it. Anyway, if you’ve got a dad bod and want to do something to get rid of it, there are probably…
